Sofia Coppolla may have some seriously large boots to fill in terms of her film-making, and she may still be relatively unknown in terms of her non-acting exploits, but please, please, don’t let that drive you away you when settling down to watch Lost in Translation. Coppolla’s sophomore directorial release, this piece is a quirky, humorous, and very human take on the concept of life, the universe and everything, and it all boils down to one thing – everyone loses their way, sometimes.

The film tells the story of Bob, a middle-aged actor and father of two who is shipped off to Tokyo, Japan to promote a new brand of whisky for more money than he thinks is sensible, and Charlotte, a young twenty-something who is newly married to a man who pays more attention to his photography career than to her. The two are gradually becoming less and less content with their lives, and, after meeting under rather unusual circumstances, realise that they are just what they each needed.
