Nyjah Huston became the youngest pro to join the nascent Street League Skateboarding Series on August 20, 2010 when Geoff Rowley backed out of competing in the event, and on August 28, 2010, Nyjah competed against a field of 23 of other pros to win the first Street League contest at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Huston won $150,000 and the first-ever trophy for a Street League Event.

Nyjah Huston Takes First at First Street League Stop

This win for Nyjah has got to be satisfying after coming in second this year at the Tampa Pro, the X Games, and the Maloof Money Cup. Huston, generally quiet and laid-back was uncharacteristically vocal and ecstatic about his much-deserved win. Huston said, "It felt so good to finally win.The format was great. It really brought out the best skateboarding." Huston beat out formidable opponents including heavily favored Chris Cole, who recently (narrowly) defeated Nyjah at the Orange County Maloof Money Cup, and Paul Rodriguez, who one-upped Nyjah in Tampa.

Torey Pudwill Street League Last Chance Qualifier

Only six of the seven finalists qualified in the preliminary rounds on Friday, where the 24 participants started out the competition skating in four separate heats.The main event comp began with a last-chance qualifier (LCQ) to determine who would earn the lucky seventh slot for the finals. Skaters vying for the seventh slot were Eric Koston, Billy Marks,Tommy Sandoval, Torey Pudwill, Ryan Sheckler, Peter Ramondetta,and Greg Lutzka.

The skaters in the LCQ had to throw down their tricks in the course section that featured the biggest obstacles to get the coveted spot in the finals. Torey Pudwill delivered the goods, landing the most difficult tricks and skating with the necessary highest rate of consistency; he nailed all seven consecutive tricks. His bag of tricks included some amazingly perfect goodies: a backside Smith to backside tailslide down the hubba ledge, a switch flip, and nollie flip down the huge stairs. Pudwill joined Cole, Huston, Rodriguez, Ortiz, Malto and O'Neill in the finals.

Street League Arizona Finals

Skating in the finals, Chris Cole started out completely dominating the competition, banking 83 points to one-up Shane O'Neill's 79.1 points. The ISX instant scoring system showed how it can influence the competition by affecting skaters' trick selection and strategy. Choosing the right trick and landing it pushed skaters higher in the points rankings. Cole, who began the final strong, missed some critical tricks, which ultimately lowered him in the standings.

The final section of the day included a buttery but challenging 3-flat-6 stair double-set with hubba ledges and a kinked rail. With only one attempt remaining, five of the seven skaters could still take first place but would have to bang out some huge tricks. Down by 8.2 points on the last trick of the entire event, O'Neill switch 360 kick-flipped the double stair set to catapult himself from fifth place all the way into second with a 7.0 score, missing the win by only 1.10 points. Huston's switch frontside bigspin heelflip down the stairs and his gap out to kick flip frontside board slide locked him into the top spot and the $150,000.
