The gritty, realistic boxing drama, Southpaw, to star Eminem, has, for now, hit the canvas. On August 13, 2011, Mike Fleming, who writes for Deadline.com, was the first to report DreamWorks had informed Eminem and his director on the project, Antoine Fuqua, that they will not be funding the film. Filming was set to get underway in January.

Whether or not this project will get back up off the canvas is not yet something that can be answered. But by all reports Eminem, who had a movie hit way back in 2002 with 8 Mile and has not starred in a movie since, is keen to continue working the project. Director Fuqua, who's directed the films Training Day, Brooklyn's Finest and Shooter and music videos for the likes of Prince and Usher, is also committed to the project.

There has been no talk of problems between the company and the creative team. CEO and co-chair of DreamWorks, Stacey Snider, who was the chief of Universal when that company did 8 Mile, is known to have a good relationship with Eminem.
